A chilly and overcast afternoon did not stop the Garden Club at Watervliet Elementary School from its mission to build garden beds!
With drills and other small tools in hand, Garden Club members, with help from parents, staff and community volunteers, set out to construct six garden beds outside school’s main entrance along 10th Avenue.
Thanks to St. Peter’s Health Partners for its generous donation of six garden beds for this healthy initiative. Each class from prekindergarten through grade 6 has received seeds to plant and grow in the classroom. In May, the students will plant the crops in the garden beds, including beans, broccoli, cucumbers, peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, squash and more.
Through the Garden Club, elementary students engage in hands-on learning that helps increase their awareness of the environment, encourage healthy eating habits, and develop teamwork and other skills.
