Extended school program offers additional academic support, enrichment to students
The Watervliet Extended Time Raises Achievement (ExTRA) program extends the school day for elementary (grades 3-5) and junior high school students (grades 6-8) in need of additional academic support.
The program provides after-school academic support through Homework Help during the school year and a Summer Academy to build upon and reinforce classroom instruction, improve student learning and raise academic achievement in literacy and math. Enrichment opportunities include after-school activities featuring STEM robotics, drama and art.
There is no cost to families of Watervliet students who are selected to participate. It is important to note that student participation in ExTRA programs and enrichment opportunities is on a first-come first-served basis with priority given to students who would benefit from additional academic support. All students must have parent approval to participate in Watervliet ExTRA programs. Enrollment for the program is governed by fiscal parameters determined by the state.
This program is made possible with funding from a New York State Education Department Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention grant, awarded to the district in June 2016.
