District schools go into lockout due to nearby police activity
Both Watervliet Elementary School and Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School were in lockout this afternoon — Wednesday, Sept. 12 — based on the recommendation of the Watervliet Police Department, as multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the pursuit and apprehension of two suspects who were attempting to evade capture by police in the city.
Classes continued as normal during the lockout, which began a little after 12:00 p.m. (noon) and lasted through dismissal. Most students were able to be dismissed at the regular time today; however, students from the Fenimore Trace and Highland Club apartments remained at the schools until police gave clearance for district officials to release the students for transport home.
Thank you to our parents and families for their patience and their cooperation during the lockout. We also appreciate all our teachers and staff did to help ensure student safety and have classroom instruction proceed as normal during this unusual event.
