Watervliet City School District – Registration Procedure
Watervliet City School District provides a tuition-free education for school-aged children residing in the District. Student registration is completed by appointment only at the district’s Central Registration Office, located at Watervliet Elementary School. To schedule an appointment, call Danielle Mele in the registration office at 518-629-3204.
Residency determination cannot be made without the information on the registration checklist below. Please come to the registration appointment with all of the requested documentation. Students should attend the registration meeting. If you are unable to obtain the necessary documents, your child may be registered, and you will be granted three days to collect the necessary information.
To register your child to attend school in the Watervliet City School District, you will need the following:
- Completed registration packet (one per child)
- Proof of age: (any of the following) birth certificate, passport, or baptismal certificate.
- Proof of immunization and a physical within the last year: this MUST be signed or stamped by a state-licensed health care provider. Proof may be faxed to 1-518-629-3250 directly from the physician’s office.
- Custody papers, if applicable: If the student is not your biological child, you must present documentation that proves a permanent and total transfer of custody and control has been achieved.
- School Records: Most current report card, standardized testing results, and contact information, including phone and fax numbers, for the last school attended. Most current Individualized Education Program (IEP), if applicable.
- Proofs of Residency (2): documents that show you reside in the Watervliet City School District. Proof of residency includes the one of the following:
-
- Deed
- Tax bill
- Certificate of Occupancy
- Legal and valid lease agreement (must contain the property owner’s name, address, and signature; and the name and signature of the parent/guardian)
- Home purchase contract (must contain the seller’s name, the address of the property being purchased, and the purchaser’s name)
- Homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy (must be a valid policy with the parent/guardian’s name and address)
- A notarized statement from the landlord or property owner from whom the parent(s)/guardian(s) lease or live with
Plus one of the following:
- Telephone or National Grid bill (with parent/guardian name and address) within 30 days
- Documents issued by the federal, state, or local agencies (i.e.: pay stub, voter registration document(s), income tax form, official driver’s license or non-driver ID, etc.)
Note: Grade 9-12 students from Green Island UFSD and Menands UFSD must register in their home district. Once the school district approves their residency, we will receive a letter of approval from the district. No further residency paperwork will be needed.
Your child’s placement for school may be delayed if you do not bring the above information with you.
Confirmation of Residency: The district will confirm that the proof of residency accurately reflects the location where the family lives in the district. The district will review records and/or contact the landlord or conduct a residency check to verify residency. If it is determined that the documents do not accurately reflect the family’s living arrangements, the parent/guardian will be notified in writing of these findings, and the student(s) will be unenrolled in the district.
Once residency is approved your papers will be reviewed and then forwarded to the school your child will attend. Once your child’s school records have been received from the previous school, the student shall begin attendance as soon as practicable.
Teacher information, bus information as well as programming for your child will be arranged by the building your child will attend. We will contact you for a start date.
Collection of Ethnic Identity
The Watervliet City School District has adopted a policy, which requires the collection and recording of the ethnic identity of students of the school district in accordance with federal categories and definitions. The information will be used to:
- Report information to the State and Federal Education Departments
- Plan educational programs and make sure that they are readily available to all students
- Analyze differences in academic performance attendance and completion of school
We need your help to accomplish this task. Please review the Racial/Ethnic definitions on the form and place a check in the box for the category or categories that best describe your child. The Watervliet City School District understands the sensitive nature of this information and wishes to assure you that it will be kept secure and confidential in accordance with all state and federal student privacy laws and regulations. If the information requested is not provided on this form on behalf of your child, a student records officer from the school or district will be required to identify the group to which the student appears to belong. Thank you for your cooperation.
