Our district and at least two others in the Capital Region received emails overnight that contained similar threats of violence. This is the second threatening email that we have received in a week.
I want to reassure families that we take seriously every threat that could impact the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff. I notified the Watervliet Police and the FBI this morning about this email. The FBI is currently investigating this as a cybercrime.
This morning before staff and student arrival, we did a sweep of both schools and the parking areas that surround each building. Administrators also conducted a bag check this morning at Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School. In addition, the WPD has provided an increased police presence around the schools today as a precaution, and recess at Watervliet Elementary School will be indoors.
I remind students, staff and families that if you see anything out of the ordinary in or around our school buildings please inform an administrator. This is an important practice that can help keep our students and staff safe.
I appreciate the quick response of the Watervliet Police Department and the collaboration of federal law enforcement officials in this investigation. I will provide any relevant updated information when available. Please reach out to me or your child’s building principal if you have any questions about this.
With appreciation,
Dr. Donald Stevens
Superintendent of Schools
