Labor rep encourages students to explore the trades

Labor union rep speaks with students in the libraryWatervliet 11-12th graders got the inside scoop on why a career in the trades is well worth considering. Guest speaker Glenn Marek, a representative from the NYS Laborers-Employers Cooperation & Education Trust (LECET) Field Representative, visited Watervliet High School to share his insights with students who expressed interest in the trades.  

The LECET field rep explained that the demand for skilled workers has never been higher as he described the wide range of construction-related careers that are available right here in the Capital Region – from electricians to carpenters, roofers to bricklayers, steam fitters to sheet metal workers, and more.

Labor union rep speaks with students in the libraryMr. Marek encouraged students to explore the apprenticeship program offered by the union that provides on-the-job training and classroom instruction that allows trainees to earn while you learn and provides a pathway to a solid, fulfilling career.

He also outlined the benefits that are available to those who choose a career in the trades, including competitive salaries, health insurance, pensions and annuities. Mr. Marek added that learning a trade puts young people on the fast track for entering the workforce without accumulating the debt of a four-year degree.
