Guidelines for Remote Learning

Remote learning environments are much like our regular classrooms except that you can learn anywhere. Therefore, many of the same expectations apply.

GETTING READY FOR A VIDEO CONFERENCE OR CHAT

  • Schedule your time. Use your Google calendar or school agenda to keep track of teacher meeting times and assignments to make the most of the time.
  • Test out the tech ahead of time and connect early. Test out the app, make sure your microphone works, etc. When it is time to connect, get on the call a little early to have time to settle in. Be sure to mute yourself.
  • Gather your resources and have them handy. If you need a textbook, paper, pen/pencil, headphones or other materials, make sure you have them nearby so you don’t have to get up and walk away.

DURING A VIDEO CONFERENCE OR CHAT

  • Behave appropriately – the same way you are expected to do at school. Follow the same expectations as in a regular classroom. Do not interrupt others, use proper language, and be patient.
  • Mute and use headphones to cut out background noise. Many people prefer to use headphones with a built in microphone to help mute noise. When you connect, mute yourself. Keep your microphone muted unless it’s your turn to talk.
  • Communicate issues to the teacher. Communication is key. If you are having trouble connecting, need to connect late or leave early, please let your teacher know.
  • Make use of the features. Google Meet has a chat sidebar for you to communicate with the teacher without interrupting.
  • REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE CAN SEE AND HEAR YOU.
  • Never, ever take a chat in the restroom. Excuse yourself for a comfort break or quietly step away.

GENERAL ONLINE EXPECTATIONS

  • Check Google Classroom regularly. It is best to check Google Classroom daily for updates.
  • Watch the clock. School interactions and video conferencing should occur during school hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • School rules still apply. Be sure to follow school expectations while online. This includes visiting appropriate websites and positive interactions with peers.
  • Be sure to start your work early. Online learning can take a little longer sometimes. Do not wait until the last minute to start your work. You might have issues with the WiFi or connection that delays submitting your work.
