Summer Academy Recap Presentation Kelly Webster & Molly McGrath
A. Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Stevens shared the following:
  • We had a successful start to the school year, with a great first two days of superintendent conferences.  There was astounding presence welcoming students at a variety of orientations. Students began last Thursday.
  • I am known for giving away swag, so notebooks were given to each staff member, and each board member has one at their place setting tonight.
  • Thank you to Ms. DeMento for the work she put into the Welcome Back Celebration.  Well over 100 staff members participated and tons of exhibitors.  I can’t think of a better way to kick off the school year.  New staff who attended gave positive feedback on the event.
  • The first PTA meeting of the school year is tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. at WES.
  • The WJSHS open house will be held on September 19.
  • The first home football game is scheduled for September 20.  The youth football program will be recognized during the game.
  • WES open houses are scheduled for September 25 and 26.
  • The District Comprehensive Improvement Plan and School Comprehensive Improvement Plan are on tonight’s agenda. I sent data today for Board members to look at.  Let me know if you have any questions.  In the coming months, we will present more of our assessment data.  It is currently embargoed, so when it is released, I will share it.
  • Thank you to the community that supported the district and donated furniture, school supplies, crocs and socks.
  • Thank you to the City of Watervliet and the Watervliet Police Department for their commitment to the SRO program, which is now 5 days a week.
Mr. Groat added:
  • The two superintendent’s conference days set the tone.  Having two days allows staff to come in, get classrooms set up, and get the building set up.  The classrooms look great.
  • Parents have provided a lot of positive feedback and expressed appreciation.
  • We have a lot of great new hires with a lot of positive excitement.
  • We had the best opening day ever.  I am super proud of the staff and the community.
Mrs. Williams added:
  • The 6th grade orientation was a success.  Almost all 6th graders showed up.
  • Yondr pouches are continuing to be a success.  The hallways are loud, which indicates social interaction among students, while decreasing distractions in the classroom.
  • EVOLVE has 24 students this year.  Some students struggled at first, but they are settling in and are excited about their first activity, which is journaling with Mrs. McKee.
  • I am excited for the school year.
