Five Cannoneer student athletes commit to play at college level

Five Watervliet High School seniors will continue to play sports next year at the college level. The five signed letters of intent during a "signing day" ceremony organized by the Athletic Department on Friday, June 8.

•   Basketball player Brandon Amancio will continue his athletic career at SUNY Orange. A transplant to Watervliet in his senior year, Brandon quickly proved himself to be a play-maker on boys basketball team and was integral in the Cannoneers successful season and post-season run.

•   Joey Atkins will play Division II basketball next year at Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He was Colonial Council MVP, Section 2 Class B First Team, and led the Cannoneers to Section 2 Class B semifinals. Joey was one of two seniors to be named Male Student Athlete of the Year for 2018 as selected by coaches.

•   Multi-sport athlete Meghan Murray will play women’s basketball for the Sage Colleges next year. She played four sports this year (soccer, football, basketball and softball), was All Colonial Council in soccer, basketball and softball, and served as captain of all three teams. Meg also is the salutatorian of the Class of 2018, and was named female Student Athlete of the Year for 2018.

•   Wrestler Connor Lyons will compete for the Spartans at Castleton State University. He had the most wins in school history in wrestling, finished 5th in the state at 113 lbs, made First Team All Colonial Council, and is the most-decorated wrestler in Watervliet school history. Connor was one of two seniors to be named Male Student Athlete of the Year for 2018 as selected by coaches.

•   Two-sport athlete Hunter Weaver will wrestle for Castleton State University in Vermont. He was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams, a Section 2 Senior All-Star in football and Colonial Council 2nd Team for wrestling.

Families, coaches, teachers, teammates and school administrators gathered in the conference room at Watervliet Jr./Sr. High School to celebrate the five student athletes. Athletic Director Michael Foust spoke briefly about the accomplishments of each student-athlete before the letter signing.
